barker black

bespoke mens footwear brand, founded by arthur barker in 1880, is a seriously special brand. all shoes are made by Italian or French leather by hand and left to settle for 15 – 30 days to establish the signature shape of a barker shoe. each shoe had the skull and crossbones identity tacked on to the sole by hand, inspired by an ancient regiment of British guardsmen called the 17th lancers. their original logo was a skull and crossbones with a banner that celebrated their “death or glory” motto. they have just launched their second american boutique in los angeles.

lorenzo petrantoni

lorenzo petrantoni is an italian illustrator/graphic designer. we came across his work when we saw the collaboration between petrantoni and spazio pontaccio to create these fantastic clocks under the concept of ‘timeless story’. we love the little cuckoo bird hidden at the top of the face. he was born in 1970 and graduated from graphic design school in milan, he later worked as an art director for young & rubicam in france before finally moving back to italy, where he lives and works today. enjoy the video at the end.

32 flowers

everyone likes a flower, even the boys. however not everyone likes cut flowers as they should really be stuck in the ground not wilting on your desk. sandra bautista, a spanish designer, has created a book of paper flowers which assuage the guilt factor. the only problem is they don’t smell as nice.

catfish

where the social network film is about the ascension of online forums, catfish shows just how these networking facilities can get very weird.

based around nev schulman who is filmed by his brother ariel and friend henry in documentary/hand-held-camera style, the story begins with abby pierce, an eight-year-old child prodigy artist in rural michigan, sending him a painting of one of his photographs. they strike up a friendship via facebook.

nev’s network extends to abby’s family and specifically her sister who he falls for. they begin a long-distance relationship but cracks begin to show in her story and the story follows his attempts at meeting her in person.

i won’t reveal the twist (though you can find out for yourself on wiki). questions have been raised as to whether it’s a hoax but john defore of the hollywood reporter called catfish "jaw-dropping" and "crowd-pleasing" after seeing it at the 2010 sundance film festival.
